Science guidelines
SUPPLIES for each semester:
1 spiral notebook (minimum 70 pages), black or blue pen, red pen for grading, ruler, colored pencils, #2 pencils, glue sticks or tape, scissors, ear buds
BEHAVIOR AND CLASSROOM ROUTINE:
· Follow the Young Behavior and Classroom Matrix (Be READY to learn, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE)
· Follow all Flinn Safety Rules during lab time.
GRADES
The best way to make the highest grade you can is to start the first day of each grading period with your BEST effort. The minimum passing grade is 70. Therefore, consistently keeping up with your homework and Interactive notebook is necessary in order to pass my class. Even a few zeros can impact your grades! All grades will be numerical. Six weeks grades will be derived from the following averages:
QUIZ – 60% DAILY / LAB-40 %
Late Work, Missing Work, and Makeups
All assignments will be completed and turned in at the time due. Late work due to absence should be completed immediately as it is important to your developing knowledge on the topic. Any assignments due the day of the absence will be due on the student’s return. Any scheduled test will be taken on the student’s return. Some assignments may require the student attend after school tutorials to make up.
REMEDIATION
Students that score below a 70 on a quiz will be allowed to retake the quiz in order to demonstrate mastery. If you pass the re-quiz, your grade will be changed to a maximum of 70%. This re-quiz must be done BEFORE the next quiz.
PAP REMEDIATION
Should you score below a 70 on a quiz, you may take a comprehensive make-up quiz at the end of the six weeks.
Online Textbook
Online access to the textbook will be provided in the first weeks of school. Use this as needed throughout the school year and as a reference to enhance your understanding of the subject material.
The science department uses interactive notebooks (spiral) as a way to record daily assignments and as a place to store their labs and quizzes. Students are expected to maintain their notebook and bring it to class daily. This notebook will be their study guide for their semester exam in science.
CITIZENSHIP GRADE
Citizenship grades based on Future-Ready skills which include: autonomy (demonstrating persistence), collaboration (working with others), communication (speaking, listening, and other nonverbal), creativity (unique and imaginative ideas), critical thinking (analysis), growth mindset (positive attitude, use feedback to improve) and professional ethics (integrity and responsibility, keeping interests of the school in mind).
GENERAL COMMENTS:
I am excited about exploring science with you and your child this year. If questions or concerns arise, I can be reached by email at [email protected]. This is the fastest way to reach me. I will email or call you back as soon as I can. Finally, I post grades at least once a week which can be observed in the Parent Self Serve section of the AISD website.
Good luck and let’s have a fantastic year! P.S. please read attachments.
